Cleaning Products and Children: A Practical Storage Plan That Works
Why colourful concentrated capsules deserve special attention and how to build safer storage into an ordinary busy home.

The short version
- Store cleaning products high, locked and in original packaging
- Laundry and dishwasher capsules can cause serious poisoning injuries
- If exposure happens, seek urgent professional advice rather than inducing vomiting
Child-safe storage needs to survive the rushed Tuesday evening, not just look sensible during a cupboard tidy. Concentrated laundry and dishwasher capsules are a particular concern because young children can mistake their small, soft, brightly coloured appearance for something edible.
Build two layers of protection
Choose a high cupboard and add a working child-resistant catch. Keep products in their original closed packs so warnings, ingredients and emergency details stay with them. Never decant cleaner into a drink bottle or unlabelled jar.
The vulnerable moments
- When a capsule is sitting on top of the machine
- While a delivery box is unpacked
- During a move or kitchen renovation
- When grandparents or visitors bring medicines and toiletries
- When a child begins climbing earlier than expected
If exposure happens
For severe symptoms, breathing difficulty, collapse or seizures, call emergency services. For suspected poisoning, contact NHS 111 or follow current NHS guidance. Do not make a child vomit unless a medical professional specifically tells you to.
Victoria's tip
Do a 60-second closing check after every wash: pack shut, cupboard latched, stray sheet or capsule removed.
